Transforming Senior Meetups – Service Design Project in Collaboration with Huddinge Municipality

In this project, our team collaborated with Huddinge Municipality to improve social activities for seniors in the Vårby area. The goal was to design more inclusive, accessible, and meaningful senior meetups.

🧠 Our Approach

Using a human-centered design process, we applied qualitative research methods to understand seniors’ real needs. We conducted semi-structured interviews, did field observations (service safari), and created personas and a user journey map to visualize their everyday challenges when trying to join social activities.

The research revealed key problems such as:

  • Language barriers and cultural disconnect
  • Unclear or inaccessible marketing (e.g., small-font posters in Swedish only)
  • Lack of engaging activities, especially for men
  • Poor signage and navigation to venues

🎯 Our Design Interventions

Based on our insights, we developed three main transformation strategies:

Improved communication & outreach

  • Flyers at healthcare centers
  • Postal mail to seniors
  • Peer-to-peer communication with senior volunteers
  • “Bring a friend” bonus concept

Better graphic design for inclusion

  • Clear, senior-friendly layouts (A3 format, large readable fonts)
  • Multilingual versions to include non-Swedish speakers
  • Physical maps to support non-digital navigation

New inclusive activities

  • Events tailored to male interests (e.g., cars, sports, board games)
  • “Cultural meetups” that celebrate diverse backgrounds through food, music and storytelling

This project showed how design thinking and collaboration with the public sector can lead to real improvements in people’s lives—by identifying gaps, co-creating solutions, and designing services with empathy.
