Service Design – AED Map Integration

Project Overview

This project was undertaken in collaboration with Decerno. The project focused on improving public access to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in Sweden by enhancing Decerno’s system for the Hjärtstartarregistret (the Swedish AED registry). The goal was to leverage creative design methods to improve the accessibility and public awareness of the registry. The project followed the Design Thinking methodology, emphasizing a user-centered approach to address the core question: “How can we save more lives from cardiac arrest using AEDs?”.

My Role

I believe I made several key contributions to this project. One of my main ideas was to integrate the AED registry into existing map applications like Google Maps or Apple Maps. My thinking was that this would significantly improve accessibility by simplifying the process of locating the nearest AED in an emergency. I also actively participated in user interviews, which were crucial for understanding the public’s knowledge, attitudes, and concerns regarding AEDs. These interviews played a vital role in shaping our project’s direction, particularly our focus on making AEDs easier and faster to locate. Furthermore, I contributed to user testing and design critique, offering suggestions for improvements in design and functionality.

Outcomes

Our primary outcome was the concept of integrating the AED registry into widely-used map applications. This solution directly addresses the challenge of quickly and efficiently locating AEDs during critical cardiac events by leveraging a familiar and accessible platform. Throughout the project, we maintained a strong user-centered approach, using insights from user interviews to ensure our solution effectively meets the public’s needs in real-world emergency scenarios.
